The Rich History of Vlaggetjesdag

Vlaggetjesdag, or “Flag Day,” is a traditional Dutch festival that marks the beginning of the herring season. This vibrant celebration has its roots in the 1940s, although the practice of celebrating the new herring season is much older. The name “Vlaggetjesdag” comes from the tradition of decorating fishing boats with colorful flags. Historically, this day was significant for fishermen and their families, symbolizing hope for a bountiful catch and a prosperous season.

Opening Ceremony

The festival kicked off with the traditional auction of the first barrel of nieuwe haring (new herring). This event is a major highlight and often draws significant media attention. The proceeds from the auction usually go to charity, underscoring the community spirit of the festival. This year the first barrel was sold for Euro 81.000,- and the amount will be donated to the Brain Bank of the Netherlands Brain Institute.
