When visiting the Netherlands by plane you will first encounter Amsterdam Airport. The biggest airport in the Netherlands is called Schiphol Airport and is situated close to Amsterdam. It will take approximately 20 minutes to get from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam city centre by taxi or by train. Schiphol Airport is wheelchair accessible. The Airport offers assistance for people with disabilities, elderly and other people with need for help.

Arriving at Amsterdam Airport

If you are a wheelchair user and you land at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, people from the airport will be ready to assist you. This service however, needs to be arranged and communicated by your flight company. When at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol the assistance will be provided by Axxicom Airport Caddy. They will help you disembark the airplane or they will meet you at the gate.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has free wheelchairs available at the arrival and departure hall called ‘Schiphol Plaza’ and at the Parking Garages P1 and P2.

From Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam by train

The train station is situated below Schiphol Plaza (arrivals and departures hall). You can find signs of the different platform numbers in the hall. When travelling by wheelchair, you can take the train called ‘Sprinter’ to Amsterdam Central Station. This train has an accessible entrance on platform height. When you want to take the fast train called ‘Intercity’ you have to call NS in advance to arrange a ramp to get into the train.

In order to take the train, you have to buy a train ticket called ‘OV-chipkaart’. You can buy a OV-chipkaart for the single ride or you can buy an anonymous OV-chipkaart which you can upload with money. Once you charged the card, you check-in before you travel and check-out after you travel. You will see the yellow poles at the platforms.

From Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam by bus

You can also take bus line 197 (Amsterdam Airport Express) from the airport to Amsterdam. The bus departs in front of Schiphol Plaza (arrivals and departures hall). Some of the buses have a wheelchair accessible entrance, but this is not guaranteed.

From Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam by taxi

Departing from Amsterdam airport

When leaving the Netherlands from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol you can announce your need for assistance at the Axxicom Airport Caddy service desk. Follow the signs to find the desks. At the desk, you will also find airport wheelchairs. Another option is to use the accessibility hone points to call for assistance, there are three of these poles present in the departure hall. You can request assistance and the people from Axxicom Airport Caddy will meet you there. They can guide and transfer you all the way to the gate.
