Eight years ago Accessible Travel Netherlands developed a city guide with accessibility information about Amsterdam. The city guide booklet provides 5 accessible routes with maps through the different neighborhoods in Amsterdam. The routes pass by accessible restaurants, museums and sights of interests.
The guide is meant for all visitors to Amsterdam, however especially developed for those who experience limited mobility. The routes are shorter than usual routes, which make them easier to complete. The routes go past many restaurants for regular stops to rest or to relax. Additionally, the guide gives information about the accessibility of transport options and the shopping streets. The guide is meant for users of all ages, seniors, young adults and families with children.
However, since the guide is already 8 years old, you may understand that it is not up-to-date anymore. Please find below a few adjustments for route 2 (the golden route):
2. La Place Bibliotheek Amsterdam: the café on the 7th floor was called ‘La Place’ for years. Nowadays, the café goes by the name “OBA Café”. Don’t worry, the café still serves drinks and light meals and is accessible. Tip: enjoy the beautiful view from the terrace!
7. Smits Koffiehuis: This cafe has made room for a new restaurant and is called ‘Loetje’. Loetje is known for their really nice beef tenderloin. And to make it even more beautiful: this accessible restaurant also has an adapted toilet!
Who and why?
The guide has been developed by Accessible Travel Netherlands in cooperation with two other Amsterdam based companies; Field Factors and Starbikes Rental. The guide was realized with support from Amsterdam Marketing, Provincie Noord-Holland and Nationale Vereniging de Zonnebloem.
The goal of developing this guide was to provide routes with no or very limited steps. Bridges will be found along the routes, but the most challenging bridges have been avoided. The restaurants and sights of interests in the guide are all wheelchair accessible.
