Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum first opened its doors in 1800, under the name ‘Nationale Kunstgalerij’. It was located in The Hague at the time. The museum’s collection was mainly comprised of paintings and historical objects. In 1808, the museum moved to the new capital city of Amsterdam, where it was based in the Royal Palace on Dam Square. Today, the museum is located at the museum square, in the borough Amsterdam South. The museum has 8,000 objects of art and history on display, from their total collection of 1 million objects, from the years 1200–2000, among which are some masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer. It is the largest museum in the country.

Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum is a museum entirely dedicated to the works of the Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries in Amsterdam. It’s one of the most popular museums in the world, and with reason; Vincent van Gogh is one of the most popular artists’ in the world. The museum originally opened in 1973 and is located on Museumplein. The museums’ collection currently consists of more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings and 700 of his letters.

Stedelijk Museum

The Stedelijk museum showcases art from the past 150 years and first opened its doors in 1895. The museum is entirely dedicated to modern art, contemporary art and design. The Stedelijk Museum’s collection contains ca. 90,000 artworks and objects, dating from 1870 to the present. It includes paintings and sculpture, photography, film and video, installations, works on paper, artist’s books, applied arts and industrial and graphic design. People can take a look at the iconic works by masterminds such as Karel Appel, Cézanne, Chagall, Marlene Dumas, Kandinsky, Edward Kienholz, De Kooning, Koons, Malevich, Matisse, Mondrian, Picasso, Pollock, Gerrit Rietveld and Warhol.
