Zuiderzee Museum Enkhuizen

Blog

The Zuiderzee Museum is located in Enkhuizen in Noord-Holland. The museum lets you revive the stories of people who once lived on the shores of the Zuiderzee. You can see, hear, taste and smell everyday life around the Zuiderzee as it was before the construction of the Afsluitdijk (IJsselmeer Barrier Dam), which changed the sea into the IJsselmeer (IJssel lake) in 1932.

This amazing museum consists of two parts: the outdoor Buitenmuseum and the indoor Binnenmuseum. The outdoor museum covers 15 acres and accommodates buildings such as a church, a fish-curing shed, a mill, a cheese warehouse, shops and dwelling houses from the surrounding fishing villages. The indoor museum is devoted to farming, fishing and shipping, the temporary exhibitions display the rich collections of the museum. Also, artifacts from other aspects of Enkhuizen’s cultural past are shown, including art and furniture.

If you want to taste some delicacies or just drink a coffee, this is possible at a number of café’s and restaurants.

Accessibility

The indoor and outdoor museums are both wheelchair accessible. In older outdoor areas including somes streets, alleys and buildings there’s a steep incline. The information desk provides a map showing the wheelchair-friendly route through the outdoor museum. People with special needs who cannot visit the museum independently are allowed to bring an assistant for free. A number of wheelchairs are available and can be found at the entrance pavilion and at the city entrance.

The restaurants called Het Amsterdam Huis en Het Peperhuis are wheelchair accessible and have toilets adapted for people with limited mobility.
