Wheelchair accessibility of Volendam

Blog

Experience the Dutch traditions in the famous fishing-village of the Netherlands: Volendam. The authentic village is only just half an hour traveling from Amsterdam. You could divide Volendam in two: the old centre and the harbor. In the old centre you can stroll down the streets and discover our characteristic, authentic houses. It is also known as ‘the maze’ due to its narrow streets with many shops on each side.

In this ‘maze’ of streets, you can have photos taken wearing traditional Dutch clothes and our famous wooden shoes. There are a few photography shops that are accessible for wheelchair users.

Accessible photo studios

  • Foto de Boer → equal floors
  • Foto zwarthoed → no obstacles and an adapted fitting room
  • Fotostudio Volendam → the studio and shop are both accessible

And in case you are wondering how such a small village as Volendam is one of the best known villages in the Netherlands, be sure to visit the Volendam Museum. At the museum you will get to see how the ‘Volendammers’ lived and worked between 1850 and 1950 besides all the paintings made by famous artists.

On the other side of Volendam you will find the famous harbor with its fishing boats. In the mood for some fresh herring or smoked eel? You can! The restaurants you will find on the dyke buy their fresh fish every day from the auction. You will find a list with accessible restaurants below.

Accessible restaurants

By boat to Marken

If you are in the harbor anyway: travel by boat to Marken. A former island where the residents still wear their traditional costumes and the houses are built upon wooden pillars and terpen. An authentic place where time seems to have stood still. Between 10.30 am to 6.15 pm the ferry will sail you daily from Marken to Volendam and back (high season only). Some of the ships are fully wheelchair accessible.
