Another exciting event in Amsterdam has just started and this is a very special one! It is only once every 5 years that visitors of Amsterdam have the chance to attend a unique event: SAIL AMSTERDAM organized by the SAIL Amsterdam Foundation.
SAIL?
The tradition dates back in 1975 and is now one of the biggest events in the country with 600 tall ships navigating along the North Sea Canal before ending up in Amsterdam. This year, the event takes place from the 19th to the 23rd of August. On the first day of SAIL, you will have the chance to attend the SAIL-IN parade. Tall ships and smaller ships will enter the harbour of Amstrdam. On the the 23rd of August the event will be closed SAIL-OUT and a grand firework show.
Τhe city gets full of people who want to see the ships sail and participate in this unique tradition. The atmosphere in Amsterdam is even friendlier and more happy than usual! You can either sit by the sea and watch the ships as they sail in front of you or even participate more actively by renting a boat to sail along with the tall ships!
Accessibility of SAIL
Τhe better news is that having a disability does not have to stop you from participating in one of the city’s greatest traditions! The event area is a public space is mostly accessible for those with physical access needs. There are adapted toilet groups and special places at the SAIL experience shows. Unfortunately, the SAIL organization could not provide us with more detailed information.
For a great view on the ships during SAIL-OUT on the 23rd of August at 16:00, go to the Skylounge of the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel. Here you will have the best view on the ships departing the harbour of Amsterdam towards IJmuiden. The Skylounge can be reached by elevator from the lobby of the hotel. The hotel and the Skylounge are fully accessible. There is also has a wheelchair accessible toilet on the level of the Skylounge.
The unique atmosphere created in the city and the fact that it takes place only once every five years, makes the visit more that worth it!

SAIL 2020
The next SAIL event will be in 2020. We will make sure we have accessible travel packages available including places on the ships during SAIL-IN or SAIL-OUT so everyone can enjoy SAIL!
